Transits for Astro-Trading

Investment Simuation

Back to
Contents
Astro-trading is making and redeeming investments according to astronomical or astrological information. For example, one might invest in something when Earth and Jupiter first form a heliocentric 5° semisextile aspect, then redeem the investment when that aspect ceases (about 10 days later). This is the idea behind the investment simulation described below. Note that this does not constitute investment advice, it is merely an example of how this program could provide data to support an investment strategy.

Transits for Astro-Trading illustrates astro-trading by simulated betting on the rise and fall of the Dow-Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). For an investment simulation (which can only be performed for heliocentric transits) the following must be specified:

investment_input

At 6 a.m. on the first day the program invests $100 for each instance of the two planets forming any of the specified aspects (e.g. if Earth and Jupiter form a 10° sextile), provided that transit has not yet become exact. The program then advances in steps of three hours, and at each step it checks (i) whether a transit in which an investment has been made comes to an end and (ii) whether a transit (which is one of the selected types) begins. In the latter case an investment of $100 is made. In the former case the investment is redeemed, and a gain or loss is calculated, based on how much the DJIA has risen or fallen during the period of the transit (relative to the DJIA value at the time of investment). For example, Earth and Jupiter enter into a 10° trine aspect on July 10, 2012, at which time $100 is invested. This transit finishes on August 2, 2012. The value of the DJIA on July 10 was 12653.12 and its value on August 2 was 12878.88. Thus it increased by 1.78%, so the gain on this investment is $1.78. (If the value of the DJIA is not available on the date of redemption, or the NY stock exchange was closed, the next available value is used.)

The program continues to advance in 3-hour intervals, and for each selected type of transit and for each of the three orb values, it calculates when these transits start and end, thus when investments are made or redeemed, and it adds the gain or loss from each investment to the total gain or loss for each transit. At 6 p.m. on the last day the program redeems any investment such that the transit has passed the time when it was exact. If the transit had not yet become exact then that investment is cancelled.

The program then displays the results, for example:

Gain or loss by aspect for all orbs:
Conjunction 3 $4.03
Opposition 3 $-11.48
Square 6 $2.44
Trine 6 $3.51
Sextile 6 $0.03
Semisextile 3 $-2.95
Quincunx 6 $4.21

Thus during 2012 investing/redeeming when Earth and Jupiter were in either a 10° trine or a 10° quincunx transit would have resulted in a gain, whereas investing/redeeming when Earth and Jupiter were in either a 10° semisextile or a 10° opposition transit would have resulted in a loss.

If one wishs to see the exact dates of the investments then the 'Include transit details' box should be checked. The output is then as shown below.
